MATERIALS
Most of Brian Lyttle’s knives are made from
his own Damascus steel. Some are made from
ATS 34 and a few from straight high carbon
steel. Brian’s Damascus is made from 2 high
carbon steels, O1 and L6..
The composition of these steels is as follows:
O1 | L6 | |
Carbon | 0.90% | 0.75% |
Manganese | 1.25% | 0.70% |
Silicon | 0.30% | 0.25% |
Chromium | 0.50% | 0.80% |
Tungsten | 0.50% | 1.50% |
Molybdenum | --- | 0.30% |
This combination makes a tough blade and it has superior edge holding quality. Brian Lyttle does not use any mild steel of any kind in his Damascus steel, nor does he use straight nickel, except in material which is to be used for decorative purposes only. (Back to top)
